With the advancements in sensing, actuation, and communication systems, we will soon have very different interactive experiences with our built environments, which will bring about new ways of working. We envision built environments to be intelligent partners that empower their users, taking care of operational and repetitive tasks while improving people’s cognitive capabilities and freeing them to engage in healthier, more comfortable, and creative activities. As a result of intelligent environments, it is inevitable that the workplace will change. Intelligent work environments must augment human performance and capabilities at work and adapt to diverse worker needs on an ongoing basis. At CENTIENTS, we focus on how intelligent environment can constrain or facilitate critical thinking and creative problem solving, how a partnership can be developed among individual workers and intelligent workspace technologies to support performance and satisfaction, and the benefits and challenges that exist for individuals, organizations, and society in this partnership.
